India has enacted several laws to protect women from violence and discrimination. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, and the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 form the core legal framework.
Sections 354, 375 and 498A of the Indian Penal Code address offences such as outraging modesty, sexual assault and cruelty by husband or relatives. After the Nirbhaya case, the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013 introduced stronger provisions including stalking, acid attack and voyeurism as distinct offences.
Every woman should be aware of helpline numbers such as 1091 (Women Helpline), 1098 (Childline) and 112 (national emergency number). FFYR Human Rights Council runs a dedicated Women Front that helps survivors access legal aid, counselling and shelter homes.
